freezing temperatures continue to chill the bay area. we are tracking the cold weather all morning. starting things off here in the weather center this

morning. >>anny: very cold the bought out at 27. antioch and 32,, concord at 27. oakland and 34 degrees. how much colder is it now compared to 24 hours ago. check out the 24 hour temperature change numbers. in livermore your 14 degrees colder compared to 24 hours ago 11 and vallejo, seven in redwood city fairfield at 10 degrees. definitely and much cooler start this morning so the freeze morning-jeffries warning still in effect. this has now been extended through friday morning. suspecting it will be below freezing temperatures to stick around not this this morning but tomorrow morning as well. does highs for

today once again very similar to yesterday it may be a little cooler. 50 in downtown 49 and san jose, 47 in livermore, 51 air richmond, 49 and napa. a 47 in concord and oakland you should talk about at the door 50s. a bright and sunny day with temperatures definitely on the cooler side. if your kron 47 day around the bay forecast, temperatures will be milder friday on friday, the rain will come through any of fast-moving system starting in the north bay and then heading south. we also see a mix of some snow and some rain especially coming late friday into early saturday morning for some of the hill locations. the best chance would be towards the fixer and those locations up towards the coast. the fast-

moving system will return to sunshine and dry conditions by saturday afternoon and sunday and then we will finally be milder come tuesday in to next wednesday and again, this morning, much colder than yesterday to you definitely want to start the car early in defrost off your windshield. the time now is 403 let's go to james. warming shelters have been set up in the south bay because of the unseasonal cold weather. three shelters in san jose, sunnyvale and gilroy are open overnight for people to get away from the freezing temperatures. there are 50 beds at the boccardo regional reception center in san jose. 125 beds at the former sunnyvale national guard armory and 100 beds at the gilroy national guard armory. the san jose center uses a lottery system, while the armories have a first-come, first-served system. and many of you have been

contact family or friends after leaving home. before being found.the 13- year old was last seen in a car with three guys in pleasanton where the family lives. new this morning. the state is once again trying to come up with ways to combat overcrowding in prisons and jails. a state assembly committee is gathering ideas on the issue. some of the ideas include diversion projects, alternative community courts, gang ceasefire efforts and services for released prisoners making their way back into community life. san francisco district attorney george gascon says right now, the average cost to keep a person incarcerated for a year is 50-thousand dollars.

we'll show you the sights. the famous rockefeller center tree was lit last night during the annual lighting ceremony. out-going mayor michael bloomberg flipped the switch. the 75-year-old norway spruce was donated by a couple in connecticut. it weighs about 12 tons. the tree is decorated with 45-thousand l-e-d lights

holiday lights, friday night december 13th. at 9pm. a fresh layer of snow and below freezing temperatures covered colorado. mountain areas reported up to three feet of snow. the chilly weather delivered the state its coldest night of the season so far with temperatures dipping down into negative numbers. the storm is expected to clear out today

an unrelenting storm has dumped several inches of snow across minnesota. nearly three feet fell in some places. the snow caused big trouble on the roads. local media reports troopers responded to more than three hundred crashes or spinouts across the state. new york rail officials are

warning has been extended through tomorrow morning for the entire bay area with the exception of san francisco. we're watching below freezing conditions once again through tomorrow. we will have to watch the protective valleys and the north bay mountains. and again, san francisco is not impacted. highs for today are very similar to yesterday. we will see some disguise the temperatures definitely below average. 49 degrees and san jose agreed not even breaking 50 degrees. 49 in san mateo, low fifties for downtown san francisco, not all are around 49. temperatures will be a little cooler for a lot of locations, this afternoon compared to yesterday. his kron47 day around the bay forecast. the next thing we are watching is a quick moving system come friday into early saturday morning when we could see some rain comes through fast-moving parade snow level also

sunday's crash killed four people and injured 67. the national transportation safety board is trying to determine the cause of the crash. a representative for the engineers' union told c-n-n the investigation so far points to human error. a new poll finds californians are split on president obama's efforts to overhaul the nation's health care system. the public policy institute of california found just 44 percent of voters are in favor of the president's affordable care act. while the same percentage don't approve of the law. this is despite two thirds of uninsured residents who say they plan on getting coverage by next year now that its more available to them. at the same time, mr. obama's job approval rating has taken a hit, with 51 percent of californians approving. that matches a record low from two years ago and is down 10 points from last summer. and a shocking discovery as

>>james: now to restore you only see on kron4. a startling discovery in san francisco. a box of human ashes left near the south of van ness on ramp to highway 1013 kron4 stanley roberts found the remains yesterday afternoon. it turns out the remains are that of san francisco resident dorothy cosmos. she died when she was 94 years old. neighbors say cosmos and her husband ran the snack bar on one of the bay ferry boats. officials at the mortuary label on the box said they gave the ashes to family members to years ago. we also spoke to cosmo's son who says the ashes were given to his sister but that she recently moved. he planned on getting his mother's remains back today.

and >>james: a man accused of shooting and killing a man in san francisco over a place station for game council made his first court appearance. 21 year-old ronnie and collins, faces charges of murder and attempted robbery. a judge said ronnie collins bail at $5 million yesterday. the victim, 22 year-old ikenna uwakah and his girlfriend arranged on instagram to sell the popular sony play station on sunday in the bay view. but instead of pulling out cash, collins allegedly pulled out a gun and then uwakah tried to give him the ps4. the district attorney's office is shocked at what this robbery was

napa only 19 degrees. a look at that, it is cold. looks like now but you have already set a new record. we will get to that in just a minute santa rosa and 27 vallejo at 23. i mean all of you are below freezing. livermore 26 concord in not coming up at 27 degrees. some of these numbers could drop as we head into sunrise this morning. here's a look at the records low. that will set some new workers today as we are colder and looks like we mentioned napa you've already set a record. you're right now at 19 and forecasting to go down to 18th street a record low 26 degrees. now you have set a new record for it looks like we will get closer to records. of here probably going to tie your record at 35 and san jose will get close to your record of 29 degrees. highs for today will be a little cooler san

here in livermore. 29 degrees on the banks signed behind me. expected to get as low as 27 here livermore this morning so many cities across the bay area are seeing temperatures drop about 15 degrees from what we've seen over the past several days. i've been out livermore covering of the cold temperatures before and what really makes them unbearable as when the winds start to pick up thankfully this morning, the west have not yet picked up so far it's tolerable. i must tell you, i have seen a couple patches of black ice. of course of stories will tell you to be on the lookout for black eyes anywhere not as your livermore. but if you're looking up here and east bay you certainly need to grab a jacket and probably some gloves heading to work this morning.
